I had to give up on drinking after I barely squeaked by in undergraduate school.
It was a sheer miracle that I was accepted into my dream grad school program and took it as a chance at a new start.
I wouldn’t get all of the second chances I got during my first four years of college with my new PhD program so I decided that alcohol was the first thing that needed to go in my new life. Too much of my laziness was perpetuated by indulging in too much liquor consumption. My undergraduate experience was unique compared to my friends that attended large state universities. By contrast, I went to a tiny liberal arts college that had fewer students than my high school. Needless to say, there was a serious clique environment and you had to find a group of friends if you didn’t want to slip between the cracks within the school’s social world. A lot of my college friends fell into alcoholism fairly early on. We all drank on the weekends at first, and then it became an evening affair to throw back a few drinks either during or after doing class work. Nowadays I have replaced my alcohol cravings with cannabis drink cravings. I buy cannabis drinks to replace beer and wine, and thus far it’s working fairly well. It’s a lot easier to get work done with some THC in your system compared to alcohol. At least that’s what my limited experience has yielded. I just wish that these cannabis drinks were cheaper, but I expect their price to drop along with other cannabis products once they lose their novelty status.
